Student Loans
Student loans can be a great way to pay for your education but you need to make sure that you use them properly. In order to apply for student loans you will need to fill out a form on the government's website. Student loans are available from both the federal and the provincial government however you only need to fill out the form on the provincial website. The amount that you are eligible to borrow will be the combined loans offered by the province and the federal government. The form is fairly straightforward but depending on where you are planning to attend school you might have to get the school to fill out a form for you as well.
One thing that you need to realize about student loans is that they are just that they are loans. Admittedly they are low interest loans but the money does have to be paid back. Therefore it makes sense to keep the amount that you borrow as low as possible. There are plenty of grants and scholarships available for students and you should look into all of these to see if you are eligible for any. This is money that doesn't have to be paid back so it is much better than a loan.
It is also important to keep in mind that a student loan is intended to pay for your education. A lot of people will get the money from their loan and then run out and spend it on all kinds of stuff. Usually this leaves them with not enough money to pay for school. This is not a situation that you want to get yourself into. Make sure that you are using your student loans to pay for tuition, books and living expenses and nothing else. There will be time to buy all the other stuff after you graduate.
Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don't pay back their student loans. This is not something that you want to do because it will really hurt your credit. Unlike other loans that only stay on your credit report for seven years if you don't pay them back unpaid student loans will stay on there until they are paid off. That means they can do more damage to your credit than other unpaid loans. The government will get their money anyway since they will deduct it from any tax returns you are entitled to. There is no reason to destroy your credit if you are going to have to pay the loan off anyway. If you are having trouble making your payments there are lots of programs to help, look into these rather than not paying your debts. In most cases if you have a low income after you graduate the government will forgive part or even all of your student loan debt. Don't ruin your credit unnecessarily look into these programs.
